MO (も)

Brazed steel frame, powder coated, with shimano 105 disc groupset. This was designed and hand-built at the Tokyo College of Cycle Design in Tokyo, Japan under the guidance of Cherubim Cycle’s Shinichi Konno. The name “Mo” is derived from the district name “Omote-Sando," and Wright's given name of Monica.

Renderings and animation (below) were made using Rhino 5 and Unreal Engine 4.1.

Music: "Sweet Emotion" by the Kooks.

SPECK

I led or played a major role in the design of these products that have gone to market. See the design process

  • The first Speck product to earn an IP dust-resistant rating and two awards at CES 2021.

The design represents innovation in protection and usability: 360 degree coverage from bumps, scratches, and dust, that opens with one seamless movement. This was driven by an evaluation of user pain points with the apple charging case, like dust ingress, that other products fail to address in a user-friendly way. Limited by the complex hinge rotation on the apple charging case, other dust-resistant cases require several steps, often using both hands, to open and close securely.

  • Speck’s classic “impactium” geometry provides excellent drop protection in a small package. The goal of this project was to create a “flagship” product that would not only improve protection, but would deliver better results in an even slimmer, more user-friendly body.

  • This is a dual-layer case intended to protect the Apple Airpods case from drops, scratches, and loss. Full coverage around the hinge area adds uniquely robust protection, and the snap closure ensures that the case stays closed while being carried by the convenient incorporated loop and carabiner. The loop was engineered to have more than 2x greater pull force than existing products. Providing the best possible mechanical usability for this product added a great deal of complexity to both the visual design and the design for manufacturing. This is one of Speck’s most technically challenging products to date.

  • Using what we learned from the complex manufacturing and functionality of the presidio pro case, I returned to the drawing board to create an improved, simplified product that would have a wider range of material and color flexibility. With the aim of keeping the top and bottom piece attached while maintaining the device’s hinge functionality, I designed a simpler case that could be made easily in clear and opaque materials. The carabiner acts as an arc hinge that keeps everything together and locks the case shut when it’s in the “hanging” position. Because of its simpicity, we were able to build the same structure for the apple airpods pro case, despite its differing hinge movement.

  • The greatest challenge with this design was translating Speck’s iconic brand language and solid mechanical function from a two-material platform to a single material. This required a full redesign to the mechanical dimensions and surfacing to create texture breaks In addition to visual design, I executed technical CAD for manufacturing and created design guidelines for future iterations across multiple devices.
